On route to Germany we pass the familiar sight of wind turbines (as we saw in France), but one is complimented by a huge field of solar panels. The service stations have an ingenious system of charging 50 cents to use the loo, which is then refunded in the form of a token to be spent on food or drink and it certainly seems to ensure the facilities are respected and clean.
There are ice creams on sale with unappetising names, as in the picture. Why these haven't caught on in the UK is beyond us, I can just imagine the marketing meeting where they come up with the advertising slogan; 'Would you like to lick my ..., ...'. As for the flavours they come in, we can only imagine – chocolate wouldn't be too tempting we're sure.
Whist driving into Heidelberg we have a quick 'rear' view of the 'Heidelberg Monkey'. Believe us, you can see more than his ice cream! Wandering around the town our German OzBusser, Isabelle gives us some background on the place as she has studied here for a couple of years. Gummy bears appear to be popular (as the picture shows, an entire footy pitch and a swimming pool made out of them).
The castle at the top of the hill is massive and remains impressive still. The view is equally dramatic from the top, looking back on the town and in the distance - mountains that border France – according to our new guide Isabelle, it was impenetrable for many, many years as it is set high up into the hill. It was eventually conquered by an army coming from the other side of the hill – genius!
Wine, cheesy noodles for tea and a great evening with all the OzBussers.
